Is "Life Dangerous" for Alpine Ski Racers?

CNN made some news with their article "Why "life is dangerous" for injury-prone Alpine skiers". Lindsey Vonn is heavily featured - naturally - but my favorite quote is from Aksel Lund Svindal, who said "It's not the speed that kills you, it's the sudden loss of it that does."
It does seem the sport needs to do more with respect to injury prevention. For the sake of the athletes who compete, and also for the sport overall. You only need to look at the NFL to see how the public begins to question the sport is athlete safety is not a certain priority.
Here's a link to the CNN piece. It's pretty decent.
